Looking for Oneself and Finding a Shadow Instead

Sometimes it can be hard to get out of our own way

Hands Together in Team Spirit

It seems that we are all looking for ourselves. We all want to answer that one pathological question: “What is my purpose?”

This near universal truth isn’t hard to spot:

Alcohol.

Drugs.

Sex.

Procrastination.

Abuse.

We all know the story. We all know our story. The sad part though is that most don’t ever discover the answers to these big questions. Most spend a lifetime seeking, only to find shadows and lacking fulfillment instead.

Why? Why do we seek for ourselves with so much energy, and yet only end up finding a shadow?

I think I might know the answer.

You see, there is one aspect of this journey of self-discovery that has always bothered me. After the 1000th chocolate truffle, the 100th one-night-stand, the $20,000th dollar spent at the bar, the 50th time avoiding your mother in-law, or the 25th time ignoring that ad to charitably help children in-need… it is hard not to wonder if the path to self-enlightenment and understanding maybe shouldn’t be a selfish self-centered journey that always results in the same outcome?
